Job Description
Title: Design Manager
Position Overview:
The Design Manager will serve as a senior leader on the project management team for infrastructure and client development projects. Reporting to the Program Director or Senior Project Manager, this senior-level position is responsible for overseeing the design phase of complex infrastructure projects, ensuring innovative, compliant, and efficient designs that meet project specifications, schedules, budgets, and regulatory standards. The Design Manager will play a pivotal role in guiding design teams to deliver high-quality infrastructure facilities while prioritizing safety, sustainability, and operational functionality in a fast-paced infrastructure environment. This position requires expert technical knowledge, creative problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate with client authorities, airlines, architects, engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies. The role will be based at the project office, with regular site visits and coordination meetings at client facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and management of design processes for infrastructure projects, including conceptual design, schematic development, and detailed engineering; ensure alignment with client master plans, passenger flow requirements, and sustainability goals (e.g., energy-efficient client layouts).
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams, including architects, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers; review and approve design deliverables such as drawings, specifications, and models to maintain quality and consistency.
- Ensure design compliance with regulations, infrastructure building codes, environmental standards (e.g., NEPA/CEQA), and client-specific guidelines; conduct design reviews, value engineering sessions, and clash detection using BIM tools.
- Collaborate with stakeholders (e.g., operators, client planners) to incorporate operational needs, such as enhanced security features, and smart technology integrations into the design.
- Manage design budgets and schedules, tracking design progress, mitigating risks (e.g., regulatory delays or material constraints), and preparing design change analyses to support overall project timelines.
- Facilitate design coordination meetings, RFIs (Requests for Information), and submittal processes; integrate feedback from construction teams to refine designs and avoid field issues.
- Promote innovation in design, incorporating emerging technologies (e.g., advanced BIM and sustainable materials) to optimize efficiency, accessibility, and resilience.
- Prepare design reports, presentations, and documentation for executive reviews and regulatory submissions; support permitting processes and post-design evaluations to ensure long-term project success.
- Oversee junior design staff, providing mentorship on specific design standards, software proficiency, and best practices for collaborative workflows.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Master's degree in Architecture or Engineering preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in infrastructure design management, with demonstrated expertise on public sector projects.
- Experience with overseeing design processes is highly preferred.
- Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license. Registered Architect (RA), Professional Engineer (PE), or equivalent certification preferred.
- Proficiency in design and modeling software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, BIM 360) is required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong technical expertise in infrastructure design principles, including structural integrity for high-traffic environments, and integration of electrical systems (e.g., HVAC for controlled atmospheres).
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to guide diverse design teams and present complex designs to non-technical stakeholders.
- Proficiency in design management methodologies and tools, with a focus on collaborative and iterative processes.
- Analytical skills for risk assessment, cost estimation, and design optimization in regulatory-heavy civil contexts.
- Familiarity with sustainable design practices and certifications (e.g., LEED for public works, Envision for infrastructure).
- Superior organizational skills and ability to manage multiple design phases in a deadline-driven environment, emphasizing safety and operational continuity.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with sensitivity to working in diverse infrastructure communities.
Other Requirements:
- Valid driver's license.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings/weekends, and travel as needed.
