Why a Terrarium Is the Housewarming Gift People Actually Keep

Most housewarming gifts end up in a cupboard or re-gifted within six months. A terrarium is different. It becomes part of the home.

When someone moves into a new house or flat, they are starting fresh. Bare shelves, empty windowsills, blank surfaces waiting for something that brings the space to life. A terrarium does exactly that. It is a complete miniature ecosystem, handmade from upcycled glass, filled with living plants and moss, and it requires minimal maintenance to thrive.

Unlike cut flowers that last a week, or a candle that burns down to nothing, a closed terrarium can thrive for years. It waters itself, regulates its own humidity, and quietly gets on with growing while the new homeowner gets on with unpacking. It is the kind of gift that people put on a shelf and genuinely love looking at every day.

Every Blue Squid terrarium is handmade by Zoe in her Addlestone workshop. She studies each piece of glass, selects plants that suit the environment, shape and size, and builds the terrarium layer by layer: drainage, charcoal, terrarium-specific soil mix, then plants and moss. No two are ever the same, and every terrarium comes ready to gift, with care instructions included.

If you are looking for housewarming gift ideas in Surrey, or anywhere you can collect from Addlestone, a terrarium is worth considering. It is personal, thoughtful, handmade locally, and it actually lasts.

Terrarium vs Traditional Housewarming Gifts

How does a terrarium compare to the gifts people usually bring to a housewarming?

Gift How Long It Lasts Maintenance Conversation Starter?
Terrarium Years Minimal maintenance Always
Cut flowers 5 to 10 days Water changes Briefly
Bottle of wine One evening None Over dinner
Scented candle 40 to 60 hours Trim wick Briefly
Houseplant Varies Regular watering, repotting Sometimes

A terrarium combines the living quality of a plant gift with the beauty of a decorative piece, and it comes ready to display. No vase needed, no watering schedule to remember, no wrapping paper to recycle. Just hand it over and let it do its thing.

A Terrarium for Every Room in a New Home

One of the best things about a terrarium housewarming gift is how well it fits into any room. Here is where each type works well.

Living Room

The room where guests gather and first impressions happen. A large statement terrarium on a coffee table or sideboard becomes an instant focal point. Visitors always notice it, always ask about it, and always want to know where it came from.

Best for: statement pieces and larger terrariums

Kitchen

Kitchens tend to be bright with indirect light, which is exactly what terrariums prefer. A medium terrarium on a kitchen shelf (away from the hob) adds greenery without taking up worktop space.

Best for: medium terrariums on shelves

Hallway

A hallway is the first thing people see when they walk in. A terrarium on a console table or shelf near the front door says something about the home before guests even take their coat off. It works well here as long as there is some natural light nearby.

Best for: eye-catching centrepieces

Bathroom

Bathrooms with a window are surprisingly good spots for terrariums. Closed terrariums handle the humidity well, and the bright indirect light that comes through frosted bathroom glass is often ideal. A compact terrarium on a bathroom shelf or windowsill adds a touch of calm.

Best for: compact and medium terrariums

Home Office

More people work from home than ever, and a terrarium on a desk or bookshelf is a welcome break from screens. It brings a bit of nature into a workspace without demanding any attention. Just set it down and let it grow while you work.

Best for: compact desk-sized terrariums

Placement Tip from Zoe

A bright room, away from the window, is the ideal spot for most terrariums. Avoid direct sunlight, as the glass acts as a magnifier and can overheat the plants inside. Keep terrariums away from radiators too. If you are not sure about the best spot, read the full care guide or ask Zoe directly.

What Makes a Terrarium the Ideal Housewarming Gift

It is not just about looking good on a shelf. A terrarium ticks every box a housewarming gift should.

It Is a Living Centrepiece

A terrarium is not just decoration. It is a miniature ecosystem with living plants, moss, and natural materials, all contained in upcycled glass. It brings life and character to a new space in a way that ornaments and candles cannot match.

It Requires Minimal Maintenance

Closed terrariums rarely need watering. They manage their own water cycle, so the recipient does not need to worry about keeping it alive while they are busy unpacking boxes and settling in. Perfect for people who love plants but forget to water them.

It Is a Guaranteed Conversation Starter

When someone visits a new home, they notice a terrarium. Every time. It sparks questions about how it works, where it came from, and how to care for it. It becomes part of the story of the home from day one.

It Lasts Years, Not Days

While flowers wilt within a week and wine disappears in an evening, a well-placed terrarium can thrive for years. It is the kind of gift that people still have on display long after they have forgotten who brought the bottle of prosecco.

It Comes Ready to Gift

Every Blue Squid terrarium comes ready to gift, with care instructions. No need for extra wrapping, no assembly required, no hunting for a vase. Just hand it over and let the recipient choose their favourite spot for it.

It Is Handmade and Local

Every terrarium is handmade by Zoe in Addlestone, Surrey. When you give a Blue Squid terrarium, you are giving something made by a real person in a real workshop, not pulled off a shelf in a chain store. That matters to people.

Choosing the Right Size for a Housewarming Gift

Not sure which size to go for? Here is a straightforward guide based on the impression you want to make.

Compact Terrariums (from £12)

Ideal if you want to give something thoughtful without going overboard. Perfect for a colleague, a neighbour who has just moved in, or a friend who is renting their first flat. Small enough for a desk, shelf, or windowsill.

Medium Terrariums (£45 to £80)

The sweet spot for most housewarming gifts. Big enough to make an impression, not so large that it feels like too much. Works on a coffee table, kitchen shelf, or bathroom windowsill. A safe choice when you are not sure about the recipient’s space.

Statement Pieces (£100+)

For close friends, family, or anyone whose new home deserves a real centrepiece. These larger terrariums command attention and become a feature of the room. The kind of gift that gets remembered and talked about for years.

Handmade in Addlestone, Surrey

Every Blue Squid terrarium is made by hand, one at a time, right here in Surrey.

Zoe is a qualified horticulturist who builds every terrarium herself in her workshop in Addlestone. She sources vintage glass from charity shops, antique fairs, and car boot sales across Surrey, then studies each piece to work out which plants will suit the shape and size. Taller plants for taller glass, lower growing varieties in shorter glassware. Every decision is deliberate.

The glass is upcycled, giving it a second life filled with something living. Each terrarium is built layer by layer: drainage, activated charcoal, terrarium-specific soil mix, then carefully selected plants and moss. Once the planting is done, Zoe closes the terrarium with its lid and lets the ecosystem settle before it is ready for collection.

Because every piece is handmade, no two Blue Squid terrariums are exactly the same. That is part of what makes them such a good gift. The person you give it to knows they have something that was made individually by a local maker, not mass-produced in a factory. It is a genuine, personal gift with a story behind it.

Caring for a Terrarium in a New Home

One of the reasons terrariums make such a good housewarming gift is how little they ask from the recipient.

Closed Terrariums

A closed terrarium manages its own water cycle. Water evaporates, condenses on the glass, and drips back into the soil. It rarely needs watering. If the soil looks dry or there is no condensation at all, add a small amount of water, as you can always add more, however you cannot take it away if you add too much.

Where to Place It

A bright room, away from the window, is perfect. Avoid direct sunlight, as the glass magnifies heat and can damage the plants. Keep terrariums away from radiators and other heat sources. East-facing windows are good, north-facing is fine but may need better light in winter.

Every terrarium comes with care instructions, and our full terrarium care guide covers everything in detail.
