It starts with the glass itself. Zoe sources vintage and upcycled glass from charity shops, antique fairs, and car boot sales around Surrey. Apothecary jars, old bottles, fishbowls, demijohns. She looks for pieces with interesting shapes and good proportions, then studies each one and pictures what would work inside it.

Then comes the build. Drainage layer first, then activated charcoal, then a terrarium-specific soil mix. Hardscape elements like driftwood, stones, or sand go in next to create the landscape. Finally, the plants. Zoe selects each plant based on the size and shape of the glass, the light conditions the terrarium will need, and how the plants will work alongside each other. Taller plants go in taller glass. Lower-growing plants suit shorter, wider shapes.

For closed terrariums, the lid goes on, and the ecosystem begins to establish itself. Zoe lets each terrarium settle before it is ready for collection or local delivery. The result is a living, functioning ecosystem that arrives complete with care instructions.
